There are 3 main factors. Each individual player contributes a certain amount of prestige to the tournament.
1. Number of rounds the tournament is scheduled for. This is a direct multiplier, so a 9 round tournament would be worth 9x while a 4 round would be 4x. The number of actual rounds don't matter, only the scheduled number (these two differ if a single elimination isn't sufficiently filled or if a round robin isn't filled).
2. The difficulty of the game. Longer/more difficult games will be worth more points. I'm not sure on the exact numbers.
3. The rating of the players in the game. Specifically whether they are Master/Expert/Good/Average. This one is a big difference, where an expert with a rating of 1999 contributes ~1/4th the points of a master with rating of 2000.
So this gives an idea of how points are determined, but I don't have any exact formulas.
A few things that could be done are:
1. Making tournament points based on actual number of rounds.
2. Lowering the round multiplier for tournaments to maybe something like 1 + 0.5*#rounds, this would give the 10 player/9 round round robin tournaments are more appropriate prestige level.
3. Use precise ratings to dictate prestige added by an individual, versus the current broad categories (where expert is worth 4x a good player and master is 4x an expert). Alternately, make average players worth more and decrease the multiplier from ~4 times to ~2 times when going average to good, good to expert etc.
