Hanabi negative clues

When did Hanabi allow clues that don't give positive information about the cards in a player's hand? Players have been giving me a five clue when I'm not holding a five. This is against the rules, so why is this happening? Have I missed something in the last few months?

There are different versions of the game out there. The official German rules explicitely allow this, I think the US rules do not. Boardgamearena always followed the German rules in that case as far as I am aware.

Apparently the design Antoine Bauza himself weighed in to say yes negative clues are OK. But you are right, the English language version of the rules don't appear to allow negative clues.
