Board Game Arena

I am new to this website. I was in a game of Puerto Rico yesterday, and I made a move that someone didn't think was a very good move. The person then went and started berating me about how incompetent I was at the game. Not to mention saying the stars on the interface are for "all the jews we burn on this website".

This is not a joke. It was very immature and I wish I could say I wasn't offended.

Since I use the same username on other websites such as reddit, he googled my name, and then started harassing me about my past posts from those sites. Almost like a stalker. It was very weird.

I know there are "bad seeds", but this was my first game on this website and what are the odds of this happening to me on my FIRST game if this was not the norm for the culture on this website.

Is there some place I can go where a noob like myself can play games casually even if it is another website. I am an avid board gamer and many people have told me how great this website is. I decided to check it out, but I don't know if I want to deal with the vitriol.

I mean, is this website not intended for people to come, relax, and play board games? If not, where can I go online for casual, mature gaming?

I would not say the group is very active, but people should be friendly there

I am sorry you had such a bad experience, a lot of players do not say a word (not even hello ) but it is very rare to have such a harsh behaviour from BGA players

In this particular case, I would encourage you to report the player to the site admins for all of the reasons you mentioned above. That would be in clear violation of the site rules.

Having said that, such behavior is exceedingly rare here, which is of course another reason to report this incident, so that it stays that way.

I second this. While it may take a while for players to be disciplined (the process isn't automated, the moderators have to read all of the chat logs), it eventually does happen for clear violations. What you have mentioned sounds like a clear violation.

I really hope you reported that player - that type of behavior is offensive and inappropriate.

I rarely come across bigoted players on here. However, I wouldn't say that this site is friendly. Most players don't even say "hi," and there's very little chatting during the game. Other gaming sites I've been on are way more talkative and friendly. I still love this site, but it's not very social.

Jeepers that is awful. I have only had one experience with that type of Nazi troll on here and that was over a year ago.

I'm usually happy to chat but don't usually do more than the ritual gl and hf/gg. It depends. I don't feel it is unfriendly to be silent, people may have their own reasons such as language barriers or lack of time/energy. In my case it is awkward to chat while playing on my little cellphone screen.

Yeah, definitely. The title is saying you want friendly players, but your post is about some ass. My first thought was why you weren't reporting them immediately. And unfortunately some people can't respect privacy.

Join the group mentioned. While not everyone even says Hi in the chat, behavior like that is not common. I've also played other places and for the most part, people don't talk much during games. That just seems to be a typical online thing and I don't know that I'd consider it "unfriendly." But it's certainly more fun if people do talk.

First unpleasant experience I've had on the site. Pretty unfortunate.

OP doesn't have many games of this so it didn't take long to see you don't have any opponents in common. Is this just one of "those game" where players get really hyper over bad play? (The closest I've gotten to this game is San Juan, but I could see how a bad move would give an advantage to one opponent and therefore tick off another opponent.) I would suggest while you're new to the game, try to stick with players who aren't that high. Not really sure why someone either doesn't restrict the table, or join a table that's restricted, if they are going to get that annoyed over new players. (I can get annoyed over moves but I don't say so to someone's face. I too can watch for restricted tables. )

I'm actually trying the rules to this right now. If I ever manage to finish, I'll send an invite to you and knightbringr.
