I interpret going into the red on the timer not as an infraction, but as a warning. This is because there are no consequences meted out until you go so far into the red as to give your opponent an "expel" button. In my view, going into the red serves as a warning to you that your opponent will be able to expel you soon.

In my view, going into the red breaks no rule, and no convention--it simply warns you about a negative consequences that is coming soon if you don't play faster.

I'd still not classify this as an infraction of any rule or convention, but it does have one consequence I failed to mention.
