Board Game Arena

Hi. I'm a Telecom ParisTech student (Paris, France). This is a study about Board Games & Role-Playing Games for my school projects English104.

It's a short survey on the topic of Board Games & Role-Playing Games. It should take you less than 10 minutes.

Well, here's the thing. I hope you planned to come back here and not assume all comments will be on the survey. Because none of those "free answer" boxes worked for me, which includes the "comments" box.

I do have to wonder if you're looking for true gamers. You may have the wrong audience here. The reason I'm saying this is because of the choice of games you picked, and barely even including anything a Euro player or a thematic player (Ameritrash) or even a wargamer might play. The first list was "classic" games, which is all fine and hunky dorry because you at least called them "classic." But the next list, which you called "new" games, which sort of has this implication of modern designer games, is nearly all party games, or at least very light family games and a couple of children's games. Catan doesn't really even belong in that list. It's a strategic Euro, and despite being very light and its ability to be a family game, it doesn't fit with the party games. (By the way, I had to look most of these up on Board Game Geek cause I'd never heard of them.) Even the second group has a lot of party games. There's a couple of reasonable Euros (still light) and a couple of thematic games, though both about zombies which is pretty limiting, and most of the rest is still party games.

Now, my group, a mostly Euro group, will play party games, but it's generally something we do at the end of the night when we still have enough people left but have gotten tired of thinking, and it's just something easy to do. Party games are meant for, well, parties, and can be easily played by non-gamers. There were even people here who had a bad reaction when they added things like Incan Gold and Love Letter, as though those degredated the site or something.

Nothing wrong with party games - they have their place. I just wonder about your target audience. Someone who's playing mostly party games isn't even a "board gamer" in my book. And I'm pretty open to the idea of games being of a huge variety, whether I personally like them or not, and they do have a huge variety here. We do have Hanabi (family game), and classics (Checkers, Backgammon), but we also have Tzolk'in and Caylus and Through the Ages and Nippon.

It's your survey and I'm not trying to presume anything for you. But again, I wonder what your target audience is and whether you think you've really found it here. When I consider some of the questions it somewhat doesn't fit. Oh, yes, I had a really enlightening session of Bang! one night - that just changed my life. (Sorry for the sarcasm but just trying to make the point.)

Well, that was a bit of not paying attention, as according to BGG it's a "family" game and that's where I pulled the info from for the stuff I didn't know, so that didn't get copied over correctly. I didn't even know I'd done that. I can always correct that, but I'll still call it a family game, which might annoy you just as much. It also has a weighting on it of 1.7, and that vote didn't come from me.

Regardless, it doesn't change the concept of what I said.

Hanabi is considered a light game that can be taught in under 3 minutes to a level that a player can obey the rules and functionally participate. I wouldn't have been surprised if it was rated a party game (I know many people who only play it while drunk). But that is for super casual play. One of the nice things about Hanabi is you can play it as seriously as you can find a group that will take the hint. I prefer to play it like a mathematical cause, effect, and probability puzzle. Epic game that way, but even though it would bother me to see it played so casually I think it can get rated family/party easy enough.
