ELO Rating Calculation

Does anyone know how the ELO Rating is calculated?
I was playing a game of Bubblee Pop. My opponent had a rating of 195. My rating was 137. I am not exactly certain how ratings are calculated, but I lost the game and my rating went down -25 points, while my opponent only gained +8. I do not understand why a lower rated player would lose 3 times as many points as the higher rated player gains, unless the time penalty also affects ELO somehow.
