I have noticed that I go thru a period of good and then bad start planets on this game. I dont believe it is a true random choice due to going the distribution of all good followed by not good planets. Is it a true random start planet? If not will it be true random start planet in tournaments?

True random does not mean an even distribution.

Besides, 'good' vs 'bad' start worlds are determined by your opening hand and subjective issues (eg.: I dislike Old Earth and Earth's Lost Colony, but I know that they each can set you up to win big) more than set criteria.
