Thoughts on Dice Forge?

I am curious to see what your opinions are on Dice Forge.

Initially, I was turned off by it, because it felt too luck based. I thought it was a slightly more complicated version of Can't Stop. As I've continued playing, I am seeing the strategic aspects of it, especially when playing against higher ranked people.

There seems to be three main strategies:
1. Gold strategy (maximize your number of points by forging your dice with gold, which helps if you are using the Hammer/Cyclops strategy)
2. Cards strategy (maximize your number of points by forging your dice with energy, which allows you to spend your earlier turns buying cards)
3. Victory points strategy (trying to get as many victory points as possible throughout the game by choosing cards like The Great Bear and Tenacious Boar and forging victory tokens onto your dice).

I am also curious to see the percentage of winners based on turn order - I strongly suspect that, in a four player game, the person who goes last does not win very often.

Also, I want to add that I strongly despise The Seagull Magician - worst card ever.

I've never played it, but your write up here has me intrigued enough to try it!

Hi,

The seagull is a promotional cards. It is really intended as a "fun" card but I agree that it can be a real pain :) When we implemetend it, it was not easy neither ^^
About strategies, stats are pretty thorough and may help you in your search (however, you need to be premium to see stats).

One more point, with the extension, those strategies will be really impacted :D

As for the turn order, I cannot say but I know that the guys from Libellud are pretty intensive in their balancing skills and I guess it should have no impact.

OK, well, I just tried it, and I was immediately turned off.

Now, I don't doubt that it's a great game. And the artwork and programming on this site are as great and beautiful as always. But I have to say... the game just doesn't fit very well on a computer screen. It's just too big! Within one move I was irritated about having to scroll up and down to see all my options.

Once again, though... I am sure it;s a great game on a table top. But I don't see myself playing it much here. And maybe that's something to consider when the site managers here decide which games to bring to the screen... does it fit well enough to enjoy?

Sorry, don't mean to sound like a grouch. I love this site. :)

After a few games where I had my dice repeatedly hobbled by Tenacious Boar, it's a hard pass.

I didn't realize it was a promotional card. I'm going to set my future tables to "no" so I don't have to deal with it.

Thank you for bringing this game to BGA! I'm thinking about buying it for my board game group.

Yeah, the constant scrolling is annoying. My laptop screen is pretty big and I still have to scroll a lot.

You're right - this is probably better as an in-person game.

I have very mixed feelings about that card. I used to strongly dislike it, but I'm starting to see the value of it. In a game I played, one player received all four Tenacious Boars and still ended up winning by a large margin.

I don't hate it as much as the Minotaur or Seagull Magician.

The extension wil lbe out on the 22nd of February (if I remember correctly). It may be delayed a bit in the US (I think I remember seeing an info like that but I may be wrong)
The extension will add more depth to the game with a lot more possibilities / actions during your roll phase, etc.

We are currently trying to implement it but it changes sooo much thing and we have soooo less time... I hope it will be in BGA at some point :)
