Leaving a game with abusive language

If someone is being verbally abusive in the chat window, I feel like that should be grounds for leaving a game without a Karma penalty. I was in a Hearts game and another player jumped on me from the very first hand, calling me stupid and braindead and various other insults. His tone got increasingly hostile, with him eventually telling me to "Eat This", at which point I really had to question why I was hanging around for this continuing abuse. I apologized to the table and let my time expire.
I truly dont understand why that should be a Karma penalty for me. By penalizing me for walking away from an abusive individual, I feel like the site is sending a message that I should "go ahead and take it" and report it afterword. Is this really the message you want to send to your users?

Of course not. But what can we do about this? Moderation takes time. Generally it takes some days, sometimes longer. So we have no choice but giving a "leave" penalty and eventually cancel it later (which I did in this case).
If you have any idea about a better idea to manage this, feel free to share it there.

Thank you for cancelling my leave penalty. That does seem like a fair way to handle it, and I understand it takes time. Please accept my apologies.

Give active players at the table the ability to mute the table, maybe?

I think leaving and reporting (so the penalty can be removed afterwards) works pretty well. In addition, banning the offender for some days may also work.

Yes, that would be the best way to solve this problem.
Make a button so you can ignore the chat from that person and/or ignore the chat in total.

It would be great for Hanabi, but some kind of icon should be displayed in order to see who is "out of the chat".

Oh I would love that option! Sometimes I'm the only one in a group of people who speak a certain language, and then they'll sometimes start to gang up on me and insult me assuming I won't underdstand, without realizing that google translate is a thing.

Great idea to mute a person or mute entire chat, with an icon and notification that that user has disabled/mute chat and won't see any chat. That way, if there's only one offensive player to a particular player, then the offended player could mute the offensive player and still hear other chats, from other players.
