I was wondering, if one can see, if the active player plays his old card or the new one?
Or is it animated "randomly", so it could be each of both?

it's just an animation effect, you can't make use of the information like you maybe able to in real-life.

Oh! I sure thought you could tell by looking at which card they played. Nice to know that's not the case.
