I recently got 3 of my friends to sign up for BGA to play with, and two of them have already gone premium. I'd forgotten all about the sponsorship option though! I was just in a hurry to get them online and playing

Is there a way I can get retroactive credit for getting them signed up and paying memberships? I had them try my sponsorship link but it doesn't do anything for them now.

Yes, but you have to quickly send them the link after their registered. If they have registered very recently, the system will give you retroactive credit.

I sent them the link a couple weeks after they registered and clicking it doesn't do anything but bring them to the front page. I don't see any credits being granted, so I'm guessing it's too late Unless the site devs feel like doing it manually or something.

Een (another BGA admin) recently posted a reply to me asking "How long after an account's creation can it be linked for sponsorship/referral?"
Een said "Not sure if I remember exactly, but I think we were pretty lax about this, something like 15 days."

Hmm.. Shoot wish I'd seen your reply sooner but I didn't see a notification for replies for some reason.

I emailed the admins to ask about it - but I realize I'm not even entirely sure how the referral link works. Does it have anything to do with people signing up for premium accounts, or just for them playing games? Does it only work if they use the link to sign up for a new account?

Quick answers on this:

- sponsorship (which we should rename referral as we have been informed sponsorship is not the proper English term) has nothing to do with people signing up for premium accounts. As explained on the sponsorship page, you get points when the sponsored player plays his first game, then more points if he plays more than 5 games. Referral is about discovering Board Game Arena.

- for a sponsored player to be linked to you as a sponsor, they must use your sponsorship link to create their account. If they messed up this part, they have 14 days (I checked in the code) to click again on the link while connected on BGA to be linked to your account as sponsored players. This should be ample time to realize the mistake.

- as you can imagine we absolutely do not have the ressources to handle requests to manually link players out of this process (and we would have no possibility whatsoever to check that the request is legitimate anyway).

To piggy-back on this topic: I have recently got quite a bunch of people signed up, and one of them (username: benoitrar) says he used the referral link I sent, from which he was redirected to sign up, yet he doesn't show up in the list of players I sponsored. (I was surprised not to see some others in the list and am now wondering whether they too used my referral link.)
He's also past 15 days already (and hasn't played a single game yet, but I'm perfectly sure he eventually will).
Is there a limit to how many people you can get referral bonuses for? Or could there be a bug?

There is no limit to the number of people who can use your referral link. Probably not a bug, most likely a misuse of the link: people often misuse links. That's why we made the link reusable during a period of 15 days. But of course, we can't leave it usable indefinitely, 15 days is already a long time: it should give ample time to people to check and ask their friends to reuse the link if it's really important for them to get the referral.
