It's pathetic how so many people don't bother learning about basics before playing.

Can anything be done about it?

Can anything be done about it? -> How about you teach them, before playing, then?

This site is also for learning games. And learning an interface can take a while (although I admit Hanabi is among the most intuitive interfaces among games I tried here). If there is 'this is my first game' warning then you can always ask if they know the rules or if they want any help with understanding the interface - or decide that you don't wanna play with a newbie. You can also set in your tables restritction that you don't want beginners and/or add the description that players should learn the rules before the game.

And if you mean basics as something else than rules of the game... Well, then I would answer: nothing can be done about it. They know the rules and play accordingly. Everything else is a convention, playing style and experience - and that vary among people, even if you don't like it. This game is full of interpretation issues, there are masters that disagree with other masters as to what some "basic" clues mean and you won't change it

My issue is a lot of then don't bother learning the minimum on their own.

And they are sometimes offended when you try to gives them pointers.

I also don't get why telling they made a bad play is considered rude and even sometimes get moderated for it. Just being honest is being punished. Why would i tell them they made a nice play when they made an horrible one?

Change your settings! You have the option not to play with newbies etc.

Sorry, but even some players with 500, 600 or 700 ratings are bad.

Please only use personal red thumbs for bad play or notes, public red thumbs can have significant effects and misuse can result in bans also.

You may freely choose if you wish to give a private or public red thumb. The public red thumb effects have also been altered, or rather. I do not see the effects of the karma hard limits the public red thumbs caused anymore.

offcource i dont use public red thumb if the player dosent insult me i just use personal red thumbs on them and if i somehow learn later that, player improved or i may had been wrong about it i just remove that red thumbs too

Deciphering the 'convention' from playing and using logic is the best part of playing this game. Please don't rob people of that experience.

It's pretty much like all games, seek out players of your own ability to get the best game play.
