Ranking and points

Hi!

Just curious, why does the first in the race gets 25 pts, the second 18, the third 15 and so on?
Do you know the logic beyond that?
Is this relating to some scoring applied in live Grand Prix races?

If I had to do that, in a X player game, I would have awarded X-1 pts to the winner (or the car in pole position during the race), then X-2 for the second, and so on... 0 pt for the last.

Or if I had a twisted mind, the first would be -1, the second -2 and so on; ranking during the race could then be seen directly ^^

Table #90792162: scores from 1st to 6th are 25 18 15 12 10 8
The last car scores 8 points to be still there when the 5th pass the finish line.

The relative scores are therefore, from 1st to 6th: 17 10 7 4 2 0. These relative scores may be based on points awarded to car drivers in world championship races. They can make sense if championships are organized on BGA by accumulating the points acquired on a number of different circuits. It would be nice to escape the everlasting two-players games.

I have thought about it as I like statistics and I would like the average score of each player to somewhat be meaningful (but still ignoring the how good your opposition is, that is what ELO is for).

Principle for fairness would be that the average points per player per game (where no-one left and only for non-solo games) should be the same no matter the number of players but first player should get more points if there are lots of players and likewise being last should get you less points if there are many players.

If you set the average points per player per game to be say 30, you would get
2 players: 40 for the first player and 20 for the second ( 30 * 2 * 2/3 & 30 * 2 * 1 /3 )
3 players: 45 ;30 ; 15 ( 30 * 3 * 3/6 ; 30 * 3 * 2/6 ; 30 * 3 * 1/6)
4 players: 48; 36;24;12 ( 30 * 4 * 4/10 ; 30 * 4 * 3/10 ; 30 * 4 * 2/10 ; 30 * 4 * 1/10)
...
General rule is
If you finish on position j out of N players: 30 * N * (n+1-j) / (sum of numbers from 1 to N)
You can of course replace 30 by anything you like but 30 works rather well to avoid rounding issues.

It's the Formula 1 points scoring system: F1 is 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1, and they've just taken the first 6 of these numbers
