How can I avoid a player without using the red thumb?

At times I don't like the style of some players. They are not doing anything wrong per se but the way they play is not enjoyable for me. I prefer not to play with them but my only option seems to be the red thumb. I don't want to hurt their reputation but I don't know any other way to avoid them.

There are actually two types of red thumbs: public and private.
A public red thumb lets the community know that this person should be avoided by everyone. They've done something against the BGA policies, for example. It hurts their reputation to receive them. Too many will also affect their karma.
A private red thumb just lets the server know you don't want to play with them. They talk about their favorite sports team, your rival... Something that isn't against policy, but just not an enjoyable experience to play with. The private red thumb will not affect their reputation or karma in any way, but it will prevent both of you joining the same table. This is the option to use.

Use a green thumb, make them so popular that they are so busy playing other players they have no time for you. And maybe by playing more people they will get red thumbs from them! And this will drive them to reform their ways as a low down dirty player.
Think outside the box, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!

Thank you for the reply. It is good to know that the private has no impact on reputation.

But people do get a message when someone gives them a private red thumb don't they ?
I have had a strange experience some time ago.
I had opened a table real-time with timing set to "slow".
After a bit, one of the players started repeating "Quick", "Quick",...
Then she left the game.
I hesitated and gave a private red thumb though frankly a public one would have been more appropriate.
A day or so later she sent me a private message that I think was meant to be rude, it was all initials so it's hard to be 100% sure but I'm pretty sure.
Thing is, I assumed she had seen that red thumb somehow because otherwise her reaction was even weirder.
I hesitated and didn't report her.

There isn't any automatic message about redthumbing. It is possible to find user ids inspecting page HTML code for ids and then manually searching by these ids but one must be very deficated for this effort.
