Game tutorials: board markup? Show variations?

Special markup images for each specific game could be a great benefit, when generating a tutorial. For example, highlighted cells or playing areas, highlighted pieces, various arrows including double headed arrows indicating directions of play, "ghost" pieces to distinguish moves in some variation from the course of the actual game, pieces labeled with a letter or number, all can make the tutorial easier to understand. Of course it would be up to a specific game's developer to make such images, but there might be a common library to access. Also it would help immensely if the tutorial could show variations, not just talk about them.
