Existing Game will not Connect following graphics change

My currently running game of Carcassone stalls out on loading with "Application loading" and "Connecting to your game" at the top.
The look of the tiles has changed, at first I thought it was a problem with the images being complete, but from the other threads that's the intended new look.
Is it expected that inprogress games should be scrapped by the update?
