Board Game Arena

I've just beat a player on Butterfly twice in a row - our ELO was only 20 apart. If you're familiar with the game you will know each board presents different strategies to win; you can't just keep doing what you always do, you have to adapt with the board.The second board didn't present with many positive tiles, but had a lot of negative ones, so I chose my strategy to drive my opponent into the worst of them.

After that game he said 'red thumbing you for rude play'. I asked what he meant by 'rude play' but he didn't respond and quit the chat. What does it mean? Have I done something wrong or is he just a bad loser?

I'd like to think I'm a courteous player so am genuinely looking to avoid any bad etiquette. Thoughts?

Oh, you are such a bad player. Why couldn't you cuddle your opponent? Why did you want to win? Shame on you!!!

But it's really not that easy. Some people come to BGA to just have fun, and when they encounter somebody who uses every bad trick in the book (and some more that have been censored from the books) to destroy them, there's a clash of expectations.

That's why I am playing mostly tournaments. There, I totally expect - and am - a merciless opponent. But when I play a normal game, I use a tit-for-tat approach. As long as my opponent isn't overly aggressive, I hold back. That can cost me the victory. So what, there's more in life than ELO points.

Everything ok, he is just a bad looser.

If he does not want to play against you again, he can give you a private red thumb so that you do not get matched again, but it does not have any bad consequences for you. (Not sure what he actually did though.)

If he prefers "soft play", he can open a table by himself and announce it in a note or try to announce in chat at game start.

Do you have any examples of "bad tricks"? I'm sorry, but unless there's a bug the games won't let you cheat, so there are no bad tricks in my opinion.

To the OP: this was a fragile sore loser. If someone's ego can't handle losing maybe they should do what someone else suggested and create a safe space for themselves where they only play with weak players. I like learning new games and fully accept that, unless it's a game that's predominately luck-based, I will likely get DESTROYED....OFTEN. That's life.

the reality is you'll get some red thumbs from sore losers, but it is pretty rare and will have no effect on your reputation. You have to get a large amount of red thumbs for it to actually reduce your karma, so all it really means is you won't have to play this person again.

You did nothing wrong, if people don't understand how to play a 2 player game to win and are trying to play a co-op within a competitive game to get high scores then they should be playing solo or co-op games

Once a game is obviously won I can see letting up a little instead of maximizing margin of victory, but to each there own. I'd certainly not be upset if someone wants to beat me by as much as possible...and if it is good play from then learn from it, if it is pure luck then shrug it off and move on.

Note: I love a bit of smack talk in games and some childish name calling, but I never use ‘swearing’ in these instances - my lexicon is broad enough - and usually go with thematic insults regarding the player’s faction.

As for the OP ... people generally don’t ‘enjoy’ losing because they are losers (with the exception of those playing for banter/fun of it!). Winners enjoy losing because they learn in their defeats - as in life in general, in my experience.

If people don’t wish to chat so be it. I imagine when I play I won’t bother with chat EVERY game if I’m multitasking. Sometimes it’s best not to assume too much about someone’s in/action and err on the side of a charitable perspective of what some unknown person is or isn’t doing/thinking ... basically imbue yourself with a little stoicism and enjoy what little boons happen to fall into your lap

As in the above message saying ‘hope you die’ is an ‘insult’? Seems a tad extreme.

If I call someone ‘a slimly lizard’ when they are playing a ‘lizard’ in game that is classed as an ‘insult’?
If, like I have, I call someone a ‘filthy hobbit’ and tell them to ‘go away or die’ is that classed as an ‘insult’?

I’m just looking for clarification because I know the world has gone a little mad and many people are looking for excuses to ban players simply because they are ‘offended’ by jokes and jovial banter.

I like interacting in chat, but if what I’ve marked above is ‘insulting’ then I’ll just never bother using chat ... kind of sad if things have gotten this bad in day-to-day communication.

Again, can someone PLEASE define what is classed as ‘insulting’? If goodhearted banter - like above - classed as ‘insulting’?

You are crossing the bounds of a mere insult there, and not in a milder direction.
