Is there a preferred process for enhancing backgammon?

I'm a developer/potential contributor who very much enjoys/appreciates BGA and would like to see improvements to the backgammon game. Some of the things I'd appreciate that would seem to be straightforward as incremental improvements to the existing implementation:
(1) A player preference to allow auto-moves when there is only one legal move for a given roll.
(2) Permitting a mid-move undo (useful in cases where you move one piece and realize that the other cube doesn't take you where you think it did).
And then there are a whole bunch of things that would be nice to have re: match play with the doubling cube and all of its nuances, although I appreciate from reading previous forum posts that some are worried this will complicate/degrade the experience for those who like the current implementation as it is. (If these concerns can't be addressed in the current implementation, perhaps there could be a separate match-play backgammon?)
Q's:
1) Is backgammon generally open for contributions and/or a more featureful implementation?
2) If it is, what's the process for someone like me to work on one or more of these improvements?
3) Given that people seem to have strong opinions about the game mechanics, where's the best place to have a community conversation about what shape of changes would be acceptable?
