How similar is this to Canasta? I (and my family) love Canasta, so I would love to playtest this if it similar to Canasta

I'd say it's Canasta-like, with some important differences (I've never actually played Canasta except against a computer, so caveat emptor). See here for a description tailored to this implementation, and here for more generalized rules of play.
