When creating a new game. There’s a variant option with either a yes or no. I couldn’t find any info on what the variant is.

What is the variant option?

I'm not entirely certain if that's what was implemented here, but I'm aware there's a variant of Marrakech where you rotate the piece after you move, instead of before moving.

Perhaps it's that one. I may be wrong, though.

Seems the variant is not available in the US scan available on BGG, wheareas it is in the french version:

VARIANTE :
A son tour le joueur effectue dans l’ordre les actions suivantes :
1) lancer le dé ;
2) faire avancer Assam ;
3) payer éventuellement sa dîme à un adversaire ;
4) poser un tapis ;
5) pivoter Assam d’un quart de tour.

but I'm aware there's a variant of Marrakech where you rotate the piece after you move, instead of before moving.
you are correct! that's what described in the french text above

Gotta try this, seems a more interesting design choice ihmo. I am still puzzled by the forced carpet choice in 2p though ...

Playing in person you would "shuffle" your two carpet colors together so that they would come up randomly.
That's why it's a "forced carpet choice," because it isn't a choice to begin with.

I don't understand how this is related to the current topic ?
