Could we get only +1 for each game, or is that possible to get more ranking point for one game?

At the very least gives you an idea of the experience of the player.
If I want to start from mission X, I usually indicate an Elo constraint (= number of games played) in the table description.
For instance :

Start from mission 20
Elo > 15

I can't use the BGA filtering since it is limited to broad range of player (except that I can exclude complete beginners), but I can still manually expel players who do not have the Elo I require but still join before starting the game.

even then - you can have a rating of 20 and never got past the first mission or have a rating of 1 and have completed all 50 missions....

i don't mind the rating - but it just seems utterly pointless to me

Yes of course, that just gives an idea, not the truth about the skills of the players.
