a bug?

I created the tournament for players with reputation >85%: https://boardgamearena.com/newtournament?id=65281

However, one player with reputation 70% registered for participation.

Why?

At the moment of registration this player probably had enough reputation. Later he lost reputation points due to too many open turn-based tournament games. Perhaps something happened between registration to the tournaments and today resulting in getting late on many games.

No. I've tried to play with him several times. He always had the bad reputation and definitely it was insufficient before this tournament registration.

In my experience, Eigeneier is a nice guy (I had some good chats with him) who loves to play, but overtaxes himself with too many games. The word "addiction" might come to the mind.

In my Carcassonne tournament series, he often goes into overtime. Personally, I have no problem with that, and I never cancel opponents in a tournament. If both timers run out, then it's over. Not before. I don't want to win a game because somebody had a collision with Real Life(tm). But everyone has their own principles, and my tournaments are round robin, so he doesn't block anything.

Currently, he seems to have missed "a few" games again and his reputation isn't racing to the galaxy, but downhill. Although, a few days ago, I saw him with a much better value. So it might have been possible for him to register without a bug in BGA.

If you think that he will delay your KO tournament too much, ask him to unregister. Do it nicely, and it might work.

Why then do we need a reputation parameter when creating a tournament if it doesn't work, and we have to persuade a player to unregister?

(I do not know him personally and willingly believe he is a perfect guy (it's not about him), but rules must be rules for all participants).

I'm just saying that he might have had the necessary karma at the moment when he registered, and so it's no bug. Or it is a bug. Without access to verbose game logs, that exactly document the relevant data at the moment of registration, we can't tell.

We would need to try to recreate the situation. But I don't want to shoot my karma to hell for such a test ;)

Eigeneier's karma is a roller coaster. Currently it is zero because he timed out in a lot of games, and when he finds time to play and finishes 100 of his 300 open games, he will skyrocket again.

The karma penalties don't really work for his playing intensity. But I won't advocate a system where the tournament creator can create a registration blacklist or where they can kick a registered player. That opens the door to mobbing and discrimination. I like the openness of BGA, and I think we need to tolerate the unavoidable weaknesses. It's the same as in democracy. It has its flaws. But every known alternative has more of them.

Maybe BGA should limit the number of open games you can have. But where should the limit be? Fixed to - say - 100? Your karma value plus 50, minus the number of red thumbs you collected? Or maybe a intensity budget of 300, each game has a intensity level and the sum of all levels may not exceed your budget? All this is quite complex and there will always be corner cases that are appallingly unfair.
