Board Game Arena

I cannot see any logic in the way Assam turns whe he gets to the end of board and has to come back. Sometimes it is left, sometimes it is right, but how can you tell which it will be?
Is it based on a previous move direction? (so he kind of goes in circles?) - can't see that,
Is it based on avoiding taxes? (Seems to feel that way when it is an opponents play!)

ANYONE have any idea on this?

Look at the markings on the side of the map, that is the way he moves.

For example lower left and upper right corner bring him back to the same corner piece.
