Group chat outside game - to easily see chat updates when not your turn

Hi!
I can see how to message one other person, so chat entries pop up in the main screen (ie. not when playing a game).
But can you set up a chat with a group? For example, a coop game like Forbidden Island is handy if you can participate in chat when it's not your turn. But relying on the ingame chat means you don't get notified of new chat entries unless you go into that game screen.
Can you chat as a group outside the game screen, so new chat entries pop up even when you don't have any turn waiting to be played?
