I'm curious. Everytime i've openend up a table for Kings Domino i was the last player who got to choose a tile in the first round. Is this a given or just a coincidence?

coincidence. First player is random every game EXCEPT: if you are starting a table as a rematch with the same players, it will shift the first player to whoever was second player last game.
