A few times during in the game, I was able to buy a card that caused my money value to go negative. In other words, I had 7 rubles and bought a 10 ruble card, so my current value was -3. I can't seem to find a rule that explains this. Can someone point me to it?

There is no such rule to explain that—money cannot go negative.

However, if you post a link to the table in question, and ideally specify the move numbers as well, one may be able assess the game state independently and support or dispute your assessment of what happened.
