In-game badges

Hello everyone,

legend says that Isaac Newton got the idea of gravitation by taking a nap under an apple tree. That Archimedes discovered his principle in his bath. I got an idea under the shower, which will definitively not revolutionize the laws of physics nor BGA, but hey, what do you thing of this?

Badges are a nice feature to reward users. They are fun, not too obtrusive and encourage to play more. But all of them get their logic from the framework outside of the scope of games. Like, how many victories,ELO ranking, etc.

What about in-game badges that would be awarded by the game logic itself? I was thinking of something like you get the "Conan the Barbarian" badge in 7wonders duel if you get a military victory and sack the city of your opponent. Or, in Sushi Go, if you win all of the three rounds you get the "Master Chief" badge. You get the idea.

This would require the call to an API function, maybe badges would need to be defined in the gameoptions.php file, badge picture would need to be moderated unless the game devs are to be trusted. Maximum XP could be 5XP in order to protect against an over-optimistic dev, etc.

Any thought about this? Maybe this is just a crazy idea with no added value, I don't know!

I already saw some thread about that in the "suggestion" forum I think, comparing this with steam achievements.
It could be a fun addition, as long as they don't interfere with the games.

In my idea, it would only be calculated at the end of the game but with some game logic, much like with the getGameProgression() function. Indeed, such input in the middle of the game would be to intrusive I agree.

Whether in-game achievements would interfere with a game is very subjective. If the achievements are known to the public, or presented as a fraction of completed/total available, it could easily lead to degenerate play styles for the purpose of “achievement hunting” instead of trying to win.

An example from the earlier suggestion thread is reaching more than 3 peaks in Can’t Stop. If a player reaches a third peak, they would of course win the game by stopping. However, this achievement encourages one to keep pushing, even though there is no logical reason within the rules of the game to take that risk.

Since the person deciding what these achievements are would almost never be the person who designed the game, there’s a strong chance that far more disruptive achievements could be created.
