Highscore challenge!

Post by Sohel »

I thought it may be fun to share some of the greatest highscores that you ended up with.
Here is my highest scored game so far (considering a win after round 3):

14 points by the end of round 3

I just now managed to win on round 3 for the first time ever for me and somehow pulled it off two games in a row. My first one (https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=148372356) ties your score of 14, which I would've had 2-3 points less than if not for the 2 essences I received from an opponents hand of glory. The second one I was emboldened to go for it from the last game and managed a less stunning 12 points(especially since I still got handouts from my opponents fiery whip.) https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=148383642

It seems like you need to get a ton of mostly monocolored essences as well as an x-gold converter (philosophers stone or athanor; but I haven't seen a turn 3 athanor but could be possible with a reanimate, might lose too much time needing to burn reanimates on it and/or playing it turn 1 though). My guess as to the main ways to generate the sheer essences needed are some combination of 1 or more of the following:
1: corrupt altar+ some strong generators you also sacrifice, ideally with a reanimate ability for the altar on the final turn
2: getting a treant with perfect timing against an opponent playing for a round 2 catacombs
3: an opening hand of sea serpent, dagger, dragon tooth with transmuter +essence magic item would collect 18 red from dragon tooth round 2, which could be reinvested into at least 27 red which might be enough.

I just finished this game with a score of 17: https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=145694580 .

There is not much merit in getting such a score, which can only be achieved by scoring at least 8 points in the final round.
In this game, I could choose 2 creatures and 3 dragons among my 8 artifacts. I think I could have done without the Sacred Grove, given its small contribution in terms of victory points. Is it worth buying a Location to prevent an opponent from taking it?

Also got 17, could have gotten more but didn't want to risk not being able to get it.

Strategy was to use the Alembic to change massive amounts of water into gold, then buy monuments until out of money.

In 2p it can definitely be worth taking a location to stop someone else from getting it. Locations are the main way you turn essences into points so for some strategies losing a key place of power will hurt a ton. It's still a huge investment though so if the place isn't great for you be very sure it's worth it if you decide to take it anyway. Also I think the merit to the highscores posted so far was from a perspective of them being high but also on early rounds where it may be surprising you could get that many points by then.

Engine + Prism is a sick combo. This is the highest points record I ever had and I don't think I could beat this ever within 5 rounds.
It was just that lucky to draw engine, prism and chalice so fast.

I'm an amateur at this game. I can't, for the life of me, comprehend how people could achieve these kinds of scores. Could you walk me through your thought process in achieving this? I can't combo cards sufficiently.
