forfeiting a game

May I ask what the point is in offering the option of forfeiting a game?
I was recently in a game that was not getting anywhere for 10+ turns, so I willingly forfeiting the game - thereby announcing to others I am giving UP.
Why should I lose any of your Points, by willingly giving up a game??? The other players lose Nothing and So, there should be no penalty to anyone !
Seems like it is not clear to anyone that if a forfeit option is picked, then a person will take a Hit. Perhaps putting up a window to alert of the fact might be helpful to make a solid decision.

it's better to give up and to end the game, than to wait till the time is over and get a karma / carma penalty
