swiss system number of rounds

Hey!

So, me and some friends are organizing a few games for our community, and before what we did was:

Open a registration for players outside BGA, so we could check how many players there were, and then we invited them directly

This way we knew beforehand how many players would join, and we could adjust the number of games in the swiss format to make sure the winner would be the one with all victories (so in a sense, keep the same number of rounds as an elimination system would have

Now, after the changes a while ago we gained the ability to share an invite link, and have players join directly, instead of us havign to do it manually (it works wonderfully :D

But now we lose the chance to adjust the number of games, since we do not know how many will join.

So all of this to say.. it would be great if there was an alternative tournament format, or perhaps just an option in the swiss system, to change the number of rounds based on number of players, it could even be manual, so organizers could say:

<33 players: 5 rounds
< 65 players: 6 rounds
etc

I agree It could be good to be able to adjust number of rounds in a swiss tournament according to number of participants

I was a chess player for years and we had a rule for swiss system tournaments.

The perfect number of rounds should be at least ROUND(SQRT(<nr players>)) + 1.
So for 33 players should be: ROUND (5.74) + 1 = 7 games.
For 65 players should be: ROUND(8.06) + 1 = 9 games.
And so on.

So I suggest that on Swiss system we should have an option to automaticallly adjust the tournaments nr. of games for that formula ROUND(SQRT(<nr players>)) + 1, and this should be also the minimal nr. of games for the tournament to be fair.

Anyway the tournament creator should be able to choose if he want the auto adjustment or not. Because sometimes we actually want to have more games, for example: 20 games with 100 players. With that formula would be only 11 games. But that should be a tournament creator option.

Hey tournament people :D

any chance this gets implemented?

right now we are doing pre-signup using excel, so we have an idea of how many people will join, so we can create the tournament with the ideal number of rounds. it is extra work/time that adds up when you are creating 50+ tournaments

and i'm sure it would be used by other people (basically we want the winner to be the same as if we were using elimination, which does adjust itself to the number of players, BUT we want the people that lose to keep playing for 3rd place, or just for fun :p

is a good idea, and a change that seems necessary to me.

Good idea. I´ve seen the same problem in many tournaments.

Unfortuantly won't happen as the creators don't believe in supporting tournaments. No changes in over a year
