Beyond the Sun is now in beta!

Beyond the Sun is a space civilization game in which players collectively decide the technological progress of humankind at the dawn of the Spacefaring Era, while competing against each other to be the leading faction in economic development, science, and galactic influence.

The game is played over a variable number of rounds until a number of game-end achievements are collectively claimed by the players. The winner is the faction with the most victory points, which are obtained by researching technologies, improving their economy, controlling and colonizing systems, and completing various achievements and events throughout the game.

On a turn, a player moves their action pawn to an empty action space, then takes that action. They then conduct their production phase, either producing ore, growing their population, or trading one of those resources for another. Finally, they can claim up to one achievement, if possible.

As players take actions, they research new technologies that come in four levels. Each technology is one of four types (scientific, economic, military, commercial), and higher-level technologies must match one of the types of tech that lead into it. Thus, players create their own technology tree in each game, using these actions to increase their military strength, to jump to different habitable exoplanetary systems, to colonize those systems, to boost their resource production, to develop android tech that allows growth without population, and more.

Apologies if this is not the proper place to bring this up.

Was it a deliberate decision to exclude bonus and control points from the in-game ongoing point tally? I don't know if mine is an unpopular opinion, but it's nice when the in-game score is a perfect snap-shot of a person's final score if the game immediately ended.

Other than that, I am absolutely thrilled that this game is now on BGA and the implementation is fantastic!

Thank you!

Yes.

Played according to the rules, everything is scored at the end of the game, and there's no reason to show points in the first place. Of course, most of the points in the game are awarded by things that can't be removed, so having a running tally makes sense for the BGA adaptation. The control points are the exception. Having points jump around for each control change would be confusing for most players.

Will the advanced boards be a part of this implementation at some point?

There are no plans to introduce the advanced player boards or the advanced technology variant on BGA.

Have only played 2 games so far, but am duly impressed. Very good implementation, even to the styling of the chat. Thank you. :D

I have two points of feedback after the first game:
- A hover of a system card stays visible while I was moving ships, making it impossible to select ships. It required a random click to make it go away.
- The blue "option" color is confusing, it gives the impression of already being selected; I'd go for a more neutal option color (grey?).

I tried out the beta version, and I enjoyed the game. My only concern with this implementation is the scale and visibility of the game. On my laptop, it is very hard to distinguish which worker placement spots are which, and which does what. Relying on a hover-tip seems like bad form; I feel like I should be able to identify each spot at a glance, and this simply isn't feasible.

I attempted to zoom my browser window, but the only size that makes the worker placement spaces legible is at 200%, but at that point, the rest of the implementation seems overly large. It seems like something that was implemented in the Welcome To! final release would be helpful (where you can scale the different segments of the play area to your zoom requirements).
