Tournaments & game time - how does it work?

I didn't really get the mechanism of time a player has in a tournament and the mechanisms of excluding players.
For example, I am currently in a round-based tournament where each player has 4 days of overall game time. But there is one game, where one player has -5 days of game time. Why is that the case? When does a player gets expelled from the game / tournament? Do other players have to expell him or does this happen automatically after a certain time? Can the game go on while skipping that player or will it always be terminated? And finally, how will the result then be?

If a player excluse the out of time player : excluded player will loose the game, and other win with a tie, game can carry on, but the final result will not change. If nobody exclude the out of time player, game end at the end of game duration, and players will be sort by their remaining time.
