Opponents in Arena

How do you pick the opponents for Arena games?
I just wanted to start a new game in Hawaii and Tzolkin, in both i'm at Bronze level with 0 points because of losses before. In both games i had an opponent within seconds, both are todays No 1 Elite league in the game.
Whats the sense of this picking? If i am also a Elite level, its normal to play versus such opponents to improve, but this makes no sense (and its not the first time this happened)

Have you looked how many Elite players there currently are in Hawaii and Tzolkin?
A handful.
Do you expect matchmaking to make them wait 3 hours to find opponents just to protect weaker players from them?
Try to learn from their play.
By the way: If somebody is Elite in a young Arena state it does not mean that the player is especially good. He/She just played a lot of matches.

Ok, maybe for Hawaii you can argue that way. There are only 6 at Elite level. And Bronze ist directly below Elite level.
In Tzolkin you have 8 at Elite, 7 at Gold, 20 at Silver, thats not a handful and some levels between, so you are not there, because you have played a lot of games, you are there, because, you have proven that level through a lot of wins.
And yes, i expect matchmaking, where you have players from similar leagues. Each match lasts for days, there is no problem, when it needs 3 hours before it starts.

It is not that at that moment 100 players are waiting for a game.

you can click on the gear icon for each game and change setting to only match you with someone from the same level.
