I joined a game without spotting there was no time-limit but it wasn't training mode. As soon as the game started, the opponent has disconnected. I can't concede to unilaterally end the game, and obviously since they are offline, they can't agree to abandon the game or to make it turn based. Are there any options to leave the game without penalty?

I don't believe that is meant to be possible.

I'm slightly surprised too, but if I go to quit I get the following warning

Quit game in progress
You are about to quit a game in progress.
This will cost you some for this game, and 1
for your reputation.

A bad reputation may prevent you to chat or to join some games!

Note 1: If you are forced to quit the game because some opponent is not playing, you should fire him from the game instead of quit the game.
Note 2: You also have the possibility to quit the game collectively without loosing any rank point or reputation. You can do it from the top-right menu on game screen.

It's a fairly new user (joined in March, only about 30 games played), so I'm not sure if it's malicious, or just not getting how the site operates.

I can get why someone with certain medical conditions would like to play with no timer, but you can do that in turn mode

Yes, but I'm not sure by what mechanism. I logged back on about 3 hours after the last post and the game had gone, but I had offered the opponent the opportunity to abandon the game before signing off. There are a few possibilities of what happened I can think of:
-A mod saw the post and killed the game
-The opponent logged back in and took the opportunity to abandon it
-The site itself has some sort of error trap and killed the game because all players were offline for an extended period (not sure if this functionality exists)

The bottom one exists, and appears to be what happened to your game.

If the table was in training mode, you would have been able to quit with no penalty. There is a non-training mode option with no time limit, which is useful if you're playing with a group over Zoom and someone is teaching the game, but everybody still wants the game to count toward ELO. I would definitely only play non-training mode games with no time limit only with people I know.

Did you actually quit once a game? Because if you never quit once, you can quit whit just the thing that said that you quitted or kicked out of the game. Whiteout any karma penalty, and maybe elo if you are under 100 elo, because you can't reduce elo if you are under or equal to 100 (average level starting there)

No, I cancelled that, and offered to abandon the game instead. My ELO in the game in question is about 150 (I don't get hung up on ELO generally, it's just I've played that one a bit so have seen my scores fairly recently)

Thanks to the people that confirmed the time out theory, I didn't know it existed, it was a guess on my part.

Paramesis - yeah, I didn't spot that it was normal and unlimited, I assumed the untimed thing was training mode (with the usual quit options). Lesson learned there I guess!
