Is there a point to this? The video explanation mentions you have to do it, but not why?

It’s reminiscent of the physical game.
That way, you can track what roads/rails you have already placed during this round, and you can still change them while you haven’t cast the next dices.
Also, it’s very useful when analyzing other player strategies, looking at their final board.

I want to know who coined "round number in square"? I remember the first game I played I was looking for a number in a circle in the square tile, then I realized someone had fun with the terminology . Probably the same person who made sure what a pair of lakes look like next to each other.
