Hanabi Convention

When did convention shift from playing right to playing left, it seems like it would be inferior to me.

The generally accepted convention is to play newest card first, all things being equal. This has always been the case and this convention was still used in BGA games I have participated in recently.

Why on earth would anyone want to play from the right in Hanabi? Playing the newest card is the most logical

playing the newest card isn't the most logical inherently and whether it is optimal is very much open for debate. The playing of cards with the least information and discarding the ones that you have the most information on seems like it could possibly be suboptimal. Efficiency aside there was a long period of time where playing the rightmost was the convention here
