My family has played the option of Red 3's being made into a canasta (-500 if held) but you must lay down the complete canasta (you cannot start with 3 cards and work up - you start with 7 cards) and the bonus for a complete canasta is 2500 pts. There is a significant risk-reward. is that something that could be added?

Well, that would require removing the red 3 play phase... Also, you'd need 4 decks to even use that rule. And even in 4 deck, it's RARE bc as soon as 2 of them are in other hands, it is impossible.

The best thing to do is to add this as a suggestion to the BGA bug database. If it gets enough upvotes there, I will consider adding it. (There are quite a few such variations, as you might imagine. This game already has more options than just about any other on BGA, so I'm somewhat resistant to adding these unless it's clear there's a fair amount of interest in it.)
