Seems to me the grande worker is selected even when not necessary. The dashed box appears around the regular worker but clicking on it has no effect.
I am playing in training mode, solo.

Its all automatic. Just click on the field you want to go (it will take a normal worker, and only big one when its your last worker). No need to select a worker. If this is not possible than you don't have the requirements to enter the field (not enough money, wrong/to less wine for the fulfill, etc.).

You only click on workers when you use the big one for its specific function.

No- The Grande worker can be used anytime when the space you want is already full. You can use your Grande there anyway. You click the Grande worker, then the space.

If it is not used that way, it can play any space you want (of that season) at the end, filled or not.

I want to place my grande, even when a space is not full, which should be allowed since the rules say a grande worker can do everything a regular one can. The reason I want to do this is because one of the visitor cards I'll play next will allow me to retrieve my grande worker. This only helps if I've placed it, but the BGA version of the game doesn't seem to have the ability to manually select a grande worker for a spot that isn't filled.

I haven't played Viticulture in a bit, but if this is true, this seems like a big bug. Consider filing a bug report. Best wishes.

I only played solo, but it worked when selecting the Grande worker before choosing its destination.
