When you're playing with more than 2 people, how does the algorithm decide who comes 2nd, 3rd etc?

I ask because I'm playing a 4P tournament, with the first two players going through to next round

I also ask because, in one game, I skipped a player who was out of time (hadn't logged in for 3 days), the other 2 players quit and o decided to finish game by myself to see what happened. Despite finishing 3 columns, I was not considered the winner for the tournament! Instead, I came 2nd. Guy who was awarded 3rd place appears to be out of tournament.

Is it just random? Is there some way to make it *not* random for tournaments?

I guess the thing that made calculations incorrect was the "player expelled" situation.
