EVENT: LIVE Q&A With Greg (BGA Founder and CEO)

Post by DrClick » 01 September 2021, 11:43

It's close to a keynote, but it's gonna be YOUR QUESTIONS that will be answered IN ENGLISH (or something as close as we can).

On MONDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER at 9PM (Paris time):

Gregory, one of the BGA founders and CEO of Board Game Arena will be LIVE on stream (Twitch, Facebook and Youtube) and on our frontpage to answer most questions you can have about Board Game Arena's past, present and future.

You can start to ask any questions right here on the forum that will be answered during the live event.

- What are the origins of BGA?
- What are the incoming titles?
- How does BGA works?
- Who are the developers?
- How is the work with Asmodee going?
- What's up with the Arena?
- What's next to BGA?
Anything you want to ask about Greg, BGA, the team or the games.

We will try to answer as many questions as we can.

It's gonna be streamed for 2hours or less, depending on the overall mood and questions.

To get to the streams directly (you will be able to see it on our frontpage):

TWITCH : https://www.twitch.tv/boardgamearena
FACEBOOK : https://www.facebook.com/boardgamearena
YOUTUBE : https://www.youtube.com/c/BoardGameArenaLive

Please note that to keep the event unstressful for all, we will only answer when we CAN answer, and that any messages that will not fit our overall guidelines will get moderated/deleted (ie trolls, bad behaviors, etc). Please don't spam ;)

See you on Monday!

The BGA Team

Event has ended, topic is closed now :)
Thank you all for your welcoming!

Hello! A few questions I thought of:

1. Roughly what portion of the implementation of new games in a given month is done by volunteers and what portion is done by employees of BGA?

2. The BGA forums are filled with users constantly starting threads asking about particular games that are not yet implemented on BGA. Would BGA consider posting a public list of the most-requested games, and why each one is not yet implemented? That way folks would know if it is simply a lack developers or if the publisher has refused consent to license.

3. There are several games with unimplemented expansions where the license is not in question, they are only not implemented due to no developer being around to do it despite significant user interest (e.g. Russian Railroads expansions). How is it decided how to allocate staff developer time, and is there a way users can recommend certain items be added to the queue?

4. Recently BGA implemented a change to arena matching that has been viewed very negatively by some users. Without getting into the particular details of this case, would BGA consider discussing major changes affecting users in the forums before implementing them, so that frequent users can provide additional perspectives that BGA may not have fully considered?

5. Has being owned by a particular board game company (Asmodee) created any additional difficulty when requesting to add games of competitor publisher companies?

6. Major platforms for widely-played two-player competitive board games like chess, go, and draughts have time controls where reaching zero means an automatic loss. They also often have many customizable time controls. BGA only has three real-time controls. In this connection:
(a) How are the time controls for games decided upon? Is there any way for users to suggest changes?
(b) Is BGA open to implementing a zero = loss time control option for two player games, as is the competitive standard in games like chess and draughts?

1. Do you have plans to highlight content creators for BoardGameArena? I know there is a forum topic, but it's not much. Maybe a dedicated space on the front/news page?
2. Number of players in Arena for almost all games is declining from season to season, do you have any plans to reignite the passion from players? Playoff championship? Shorter seasons? Longer seasons?
3. Player Anonimisation in arena - it is really easy to play against other players when you know their nicknames and can check their profile, don't you think for competitive gaming there should be an option to hide your profile until the end of the game?
4. For almost all the major games on BGA we see players parking the rating - do you have any plans of combating that? Maybe counting the peak of the Arena score instead of the current elo score?

1) BGA currently doesn't really support legacy games, is there any plan to support them in the future ?

2) There are complex types of tournaments not currently supported by BGA, is there any plan to support them ?

I'm thinking in particular about systems like duplicate or butler at bridge where lots of games are played with the same "seed" and players scores are computed in a complex manner depending on how they did compared to other players who had "the same hand".

I'm also thinking of multiplayer swiss systems , swiss systems with playoffs, pools + playoff tournaments, multiplayer tournaments with number of qualified players per game that vary depending on the round, ...

1. BGA does support legacy games. It was used in the crew for instance

That's very limited support.

You have to quit and restart at some point because the log gets bloated.

The Crew isn't really a legacy game as usually understood, it's a coop campaign game where all you have to remember between two plays is what mission you last played.

For proper legacy/campaign gameplay you need to be able to change players at some point if needed and still maintain some form of scoring.

You need to be able to save the data from a game and visualize the particularities of your legacy game as you start the next game in the campaign (not just enter a seed). (Because without a visualization of what is different, it's hard to change players in a fair manner as some would know how the cards have been changed and some would only see it as the cards are drawn)

Not really that limited, the feature on the dev side is that a team of players can save a bunch of data between two games so that definitively make it possible for many classical legacy games such as pandemic legacy for instance, as long as the same exact team keep playing together.
And honestly i dont see how it could work with players quitting and joining. How would you setup a hobby ? Would it load a game from the data of table creator ? How would you even describe that ?

Hello.

Is there a reason why ***edited*** isn't banned for life on bga?
I've read he cheated Arena and I can easily prove he is now cheating normal mode (by stalling games he is losing so he can claim ELO 1st place) .

Or do you have something in mind to prevent that kind of behaviour ? (Maybe apllying the same Arena rule where you can't skip games?)

To expand on that, do you have a moderation team or do you (the admins) take all the decisions on that matter ?
How many players do you ban per year ?

Thanks.

***moderation edit***
Name dropping on accusations isn't allowed on BGA.
The moderation team.

4th in the overall XP leaderboard, and now playing 166 games all at 'no time limit' to only be played with friends...

There is no way to report this player using the 'report player' button.
