19x19 warning for beginners

Post by Grunman »

I've seen many times people open a 19x19 Go board, having their rating shown as novice. I've seen also many times different people tried Go 1 or several games and thrown it away.

This leads me to a Warning while opening a board for novice players, that gives them advice to try 9x9 board first, if they haven't already played a decent amount of games.

1. That would help them to get into the game faster and easier.
2. More stronger players would more likely start a game with them with no fear of losing too much time on 19 board, since novice do not resign properly.

Seems the original developer (stst) is still here but somehow stopped maintenance. How about contacting the dev via message directly?
Fixing komi and adding warning are both easy tasks.

I've been avoiding bga for Go for the same reason as Chess (Engine/Matchmaking/etc..). But I'm curious how's BGA's Go rating pool? my rating is around ~16 Kyu on OGS.

Are there people using engine here? Played here only a couple of times (because I'm not a big fan of online-go mostly but also I'm missing analysis tools and such here and it's hard to determine proper handicap). But the few games I played i didn't observe any suspicious engine-like-moves.

There are definitely engine users for chess here, so I assumed that Go would be similar, but I'm not sure (haven't really played here).

For Go analysis you could use AI Sensei, or download Katago. I've also been playing on Pandanet, which has a downloadable client and possibly better interface than OGS imo.

I haven't observed here cheaters also. I've seen quite strong dan players, also 7 dan from Taiwan and 6 dan from Belgium, who plays with the same nickname everywhere, so he obviously won't cheat. Actually dan rating here begins from ~350 Elo i believe.

What about 16 kyu, it can be around 100-120 Elo, but at that point ratings change very quickly.
And also, 16 kyu is good to play on 19x19 board, but still ok to have some practice on 13x13.
