Red 'X'

I'm playing a 3 player game, and there is a red 'x' on the top of the first two cards in the card row. What does the red 'x' mean?
The X above the cards shows you which cards will be removed from the row even if you don't take them.
In a 3-player game, the card row gets at least 2 new cards at the beginning of each player's turn.
