Has Game speed selection with friends changed recently

Hi,
If I select the "Play with Friends" from the Play Now page, add the friends that are online and then choose a table via "Play Now" below a favorite game the game starts in training mode (I think that's the default for friends for about a year now). So I can change to Normal mode (even if friends have accepted).
BUT If any of my friends have already accepted, but before I start the game, I cannot then change the game speed ( e.g. to "No time limit")
Didn't we used to be able to change the game speed provided that we hadn't started the game - i.e. has this feature been changed recently if so was it intentional - or am I not remembering correctly (quite possible !) ?
What are the simplest steps to follow to play with friends, always normal mode and always no time-limit ?
