Setting up for the first time

Can anyone help me. I have been trying to get an old lady started on BGA (I run a course to help older people play games online and BGA is easily the best platform) but for some reason, every time we set up the inital settings for where to play, timing and who to play (FYI we have chosen Simple Game, Real time and Friends for the three options), the settings disappear each time she starts a new game, whereas with other players the settings, once created the first time you use BGA, are retained for future games and sign ins. I can't find any clues as to why this is happening or how to fix the problem.
Any suggestions?
It is probably something really silly - but as I only ever set up once in my BGA career, it is one thing I don't have a lot of experience doing!
