I don't know that is a variant written in the rule, so is it just a UI feature? Trying to start my first table btw, wondering if I should make it on.

Yes it's just a UI option for faster games but it doesn't change the game.
This option is disabled by default so beginners can understand how scoring works. If you know the game, you can sefely activate it (it's activated for Arena games).
