That doesn't answer the question. They didn't say "how do I get them", but what to do with them.
As far as I can tell, they're only here for display, to prove you're a worthy player or sth.
There used to be a ranking board, but no more.
Edit: By googling, I managed to find the leaderboard. There actually still is one! https://boardgamearena.com/leaderboard
But I'm only 1647th, snif
(Btw, don't try finding yourself, there doesn't seem to be any way to find yourself within the leaderboard directly, so I applied the same method I used to use: I just literally browsed through the whole thing. Took me a while - 134 clicks exactly.)

It doesn't really serve any purpose. Just looks nice to have a high number.

Ooohhhh you're right.
But it was a lot of trouble to find out what you meant by "main page". When I come up on BGA, I immediately go on "Play", and then the main page gets hardly accessible (only reachable at the bottom of the page, where I have no other reason to go to).

You can also go to the main page by clicking on the web logo. Top bar, left.

On the main page you can see the latest news from the web (new games, for example), the new comments from the groups in which you participate (if you participate in any), your agenda and the link to sign up for tournaments, and the activity of your friends in tournaments and games.

You can also see the status of the web, useful for example if the page is slow (you can see if there is a general problem or maybe it is a problem with your connection).

And there are curious things like the leaderboard or being able to know that right now there are almost 9,000 players online.
