Can someone explain the logic of this tournament bracket?

I was in the Draftosaurus tournament linked here:
https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=116279
There were nine players, and the matches have four players each, so one received a first round bye. That is understandable.
What I don't understand is that I won my first round match, but yet the other two players in my first round game that advanced (whom I obviously beat) received a bye in the second round, while I ended up playing in the second round match.
I then finished second in my second round match and due to that, I was eliminated.
So a player that finished third in the first round and didn't even play in the second round advanced to the third round, while I, who finished first in the first round and second in the second round, get screwed.
Can anyone explain the logic in this tournament setup?
Is there any logic at all?
I would like to completely avoid tournaments that are set up this way in the future, as winning is punished instead of rewarded.

Looks like they need to adjust the match making logic a little.
According to the tournament setup 3 players from the 2nd round match should have advanced. plus the byes for 6 total. eliminating 1 player.
Setting up another round with a a 4 player game and 2 byes. Then advancing 3 from the game plus the 2 byes for 5 total. eliminating 1
Repeating until finally a 4 player game with no byes for the final. Kind of long and drawn out.

I think if player match minimum is less than the match maximum the problem is eliminated or reduced. Just started to setup some tournaments myself, so I want to make sure to avoid any issues if possible.

There is no completely fair way to make a multiplayer elimination tournament with "4 players, 3 advance". The math doesn't work.

They also need a better algorithm for assigning byes. Bye priority should be:

1. People who have not already received a bye. (or fewest byes, if everyone already had a bye)
2. People who eliminated the most other people. (matters for tournaments with 4-5 players per match and 3 advance, so someone in a 5 player match would have higher bye priority than someone in a 4 player match)
3. Player with the most wins, then the most 2nds, then the most 3rds.
