I don’t quite understand that.
I can only support players with whom I am friends on bga?
It would be more important to support newcomers, no?
Can someone please explain to me what is meant with : " support your friends"
In which way can I support ?

They mean real life friends and family.

If you have a friend, a buddy, a nephew or a nice, or a btoher or a sister, you enjoy playing games with, you can lure them to the site and have them create a username, and then gift them a membership.

This in turn helps BGA because they get paid, and keeps their services running, and it increases the player base and hopefully gain more positive feedback.

You could of course do the same with a random stranger you meet in the street, so take the word "friends" as a placeholder
