Concede game in tournaments

Hello all.

Why can't we concede a game that is "clearly lost" in a tournament, like it is on chess tournaments outside of BGA?

When a game is completly lost is useless to continue and can be a pain, specially in a turn based game. If we can concede outside a tournament why we can't inside without penalization?
So I suggest to open the option of Concede a game in tournaments, but only for 2 player non-cooperative games, and on swiss or elimination tournaments.
On round robin tournaments, "concede" option shouldn't be available, because the score diference of a game can sort ties on general classification.

Thank you.

Perfect! Especially as you didn't forget to include Round-Robin as exception!

Can you link a suggestion, that we can vote on?

I also agree that it's a bit silly to not be able to concede a tournament game in a two player strategy game, where you know you are losing.

Resigning is a legitimate move, and it can be painful to play out a game to its conclusion when it's completely forgone.

I think there also is a rule that the game must be "50% completed" before it will allow someone to concede. This is by BGA's definition of completion, which might not be the same as what someone else would use.

Of course, you should never be allowed to concede a multiplayer game.

Stick around long enough and you'll see the perennial thread pop up in "Discussions" about conceding being morally reprehensible or some such rubbish.

I mean there’s all sorts of ways of framing conceding a game.

One could try framing a resignation in chess as robbing the winner from delivering a checkmate if one wanted to, but really it’s just another way to win.

At the end of the day though, resigning a game saves everyone time. In a tournament in particular, dragging out a game just holds up the tournament.

I wanted to resign a single elimination tournament game recently hence I found this thread. In my limited understanding of the game I was losing for most of the game so far, we were basically at 50% progression now too, but in territory type strategy games for example there’s no one move like a checkmate that will magically end the game. Almost all of the games on the other side of the bracket were finishing or were rounds ahead of us (I think partly because me and my opponent were in somewhat alternate time zones and not playing many moves at the same time). So if quitting the game happens to function the same (minus the karma penalties) then it makes sense to do that, or pass but I didn’t see the pass button and concede wasn’t allowed.

Again, especially in games with no clear ending other than consecutive passes or maybe some artificial way to prevent dragging a game out, I think allowing for conceding or resignations is certainly worth it for time saving.

In fact some people would probably go too far in the opposite direction and claim that resigning early when the game looks hopeless is the only honourable thing to do, which also isn’t the case, because at the end of the day humans can make mistakes at all stages of a game :)

If I can bump again the concept of resigning in tournaments.

The last tournament I played in was a knockout I believe, so one can just drop out of the tournament to concede and it's probably the same.

In a swiss tournament, it probably will make a big difference. It would be much better to just be able to concede a lost game than play it all the way to scoring.

At least in some games, one can think of passing and maybe an autoscore will work it out as a win for one player.

I ran into the issue in Swiss a few times, I just quit the game accepting a karma hit but tell my opponent I quit because I can't resign. In knockout tournament, I would just drop out of the tournament and say gg in game chat.

This would be especially useful for things like 2 player Kingdom Builder where the game is sometimes decided before the halfway point but you have to keep playing for no purpose.
