So, I *think* what happened was that I proposed a rematch for a 3 player game of Through the Ages with 2 friends. This has been a recurring game that we repeatedly have been doing rematches with.

It was no time limit. I ONLY play no time limit with these 2 guys because we're friends, I trust them, and we all play fast, but I would never do No Time Limit with anyone I didn't know and trust.

I proposed the rematch, then was away from the site for a few hours.

Upon returning, I noticed two things:
1 - a message from one of the guys saying they wanted to take a week off from the game, and
2 - it was my turn in a 3 player Through the Ages game with 2 different people, with NO TIME LIMIT.

I assume that means if someone rejects a rematch, the game goes public to be filled? If so, that's frustrating. It's not a rematch anymore without the original players, and I would want to change the pace (or possibly not play at all).

Is that normal? Is there a setting I can change to avoid this? If I propose a rematch and someone doesn't want to play, I don't want a random new game started with other random people.

That certainly lessens the problem, but doesn't get rid of it.

It doesn't change the fact that it isn't a rematch if any of the original players quit. I still may not want to play it with other friends, just those specific 2. I could still end up locked into a 4+ week (or longer) game that I had no interest in playing, which is pretty frustrating.

Explain to your opponents what happened and purpose to abandon the game. They should understand and accept. If they don't then simply don't play and moves. Eventually the table will time out (40 days maybe?)

For the future, as already said, limit your tables to friends only even if you are inviting specific friends. If the same thing happens at least they are your friends when you propose to abandon. And also let your friends know that when they don't want to accept the rematch they should let you know first so that they don't land you in this situation!

I appreciate the feedback, but it appears that the ultimate answer to my question is:

No. There is not a simple way to avoid this.

It requires lots of communication before and/or after and relying on others. There is no built-in way to ONLY request a rematch. You are always risking a non-rematch game.

I think calling it "Propose a rematch" is poorly worded, but I'm guessing this won't change, so I'll just have to be unhappy about it and grumble to myself.
